Brant and I survived the 113th Civil War. We are still married...we are still happily married. We have made huge strides in our relationship since we first started dating. When I met Brant, I had just moved up to Portland from Corvallis leaving behind a 3 year stint working for the Oregon State Football team. I bled black and orange. And then I fell in love with this duck and it was like Romeo and Juliet...or something like that. I used to get mad when the ducks won any game even if it wasn't played against OSU, and there was that one time that I spoke the words "I wish your quarterback would get injured" and the next game Kellen Clemens was down with a knee injury. I think that next year or maybe the year after, Dennis Dixon went down with a knee injury. I don't think Brant will ever forgive me for uttering those words. And I can honestly say, I would never want any athlete to get injured and I hate to see players go down.
Brant has always been the better person when it came to our in state rivalry. He has no problem rooting for the Beavers when they aren't playing the ducks, and over the years, I will admit that I have softened a bit towards the ducks. I even went to a Duck game this year, wearing a green shirt (not a duck shirt, but a generic green shirt, you still won't catch me out in public in green and yellow). It comes down to me loving my husband more than a football team or game. We should consider ourselves lucky that really the biggest strain in our relationship has been a football rivalry. I think some people probably have way bigger problems than that.
Am I heartbroken we didn't win the 113th Civil War to go to the Rose Bowl? Of course. Did I think we would play as well as we did and even have a lead at any point in the game? Heck no. And I am so proud of the class act team Coach Riley has put together and their perseverance and integrity. Even though it's hard to be a Beaver sometimes, I wouldn't want to be a fan of any other team. And even though I married a duck, I have learned that it's just a game and there's always next year.

ReplyDeleteGreat post, Katrien! I am glad your marriage has stood up to this rivalry and I am impressed that you even went to a Duck game. It is amazing what love can do! :)
